My lovely lap-top which was working fine this morning, now appears to have gone insane on me.

When i switch it on, all the lights flicker on as if it is starting up, and then it even makes the "accessing windows fanfare noise" However the screen is blank. Now i've checked the user manual and it suggests that either it is in standby ((which it doesnt appear to be) or its an FN problem and by pressing FN plus F4 it will toggle back on. This does not work.

There is also a light above the nouse board that looks like a computer symbol whihc goes blue when logging on but then changes to red, and i think it might be normally blue.

I also at some point in the proceedings pressed nearly every button on the keyboard in blind despearation which may not have been useful

My laptop is an HP Notebook...please make it go?

EDIT:</i> It seems the screen is there, but so dark as to be almost black. Pressing FN+ Brightness Up/Down doesn't seem to make any damn difference.

Sounds like the back light in the screen has gone. That happened to mine, you could just about see what was on the screen if you got light on it at just the right angle otherwise it just looked blank. Cost about £150 to repair.

Sounds like the back light on the LCD has blown. These are not expensive normally, but do require professional replacing, especially in laptops, as the bulb is extremely fragile, and contains some toxic substances.

My suggested solution would be to take it to PC Pitstop (Portland Road), and ask them how much it would be for a replacement.

Arrrrrrrrrrgh

If i only bought it 9 months ago, shouldnt it be under some kind of manufacturers guarantee?

I think you're both right and this was also geeky monkeys opinion, as plugging it in to the tv monitor it works fine...

It is likely to have a 12-month warranty, and if not, try taking it back to where you bought it and asking them :)
