My newly repaired laptop is making evil whiring noises (very loud like a moped) on start up. SO loud that i am scared not to switch it off when this happens as it sounds like it is trying to take off....
It's most likely a fan inside it. There are several fans that eventually start whirring because of age - computers just get louder as they get older. I wouldn't worry, my 4-year old computer at home has been loudly humming like a vacuum cleaner for about 2 years now and only stops when I stick my hand in and diddle the fan itself. If the sound bothers you, you can take it back and say "it never whirred loudly before. Find the fan that's causing it and replace it pls kthx". Laptops are harder to fiddle about with, though.
It can be going loudly like that for a few reasons
Normally it is temperature controled so any of the following could make a difference:
The temperature sensor being somewhere hotter than before A blockage on the air intake or air exhaust (running a vacuum cleaner over all the vents on the laptop can help clear dust if thats it) They removed the heatsink/fan for the repair and didn't put it back as well as they could They refitted the fan, either with a louder fan, or one without a temperature control (unlikely since its normally controlled by the motherboard) The bearings on the fan are going
It could be your hard disk... but thats rarer - its usually the fan making noise like that
Personally I'd take it back in and tell them to find out what they did to increase the noise
Hi there - if you are the same person (or linked with the same person) that emailed flannelcat with the same question, we've sent a response a couple of hours ago. If not poke me again and i shall get him to forward you the message.
