The Daughter's Safari Outfit

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 5:20 PM
The newest outfit for my daughter, for a steamy zoo expedition tomorrow:

On Safari

The skirt is made from the same pattern I used to make her red and black outfit for SteamCon. The vest was made from Simplicity 2484. The boots and shirt are from Target, although I tea-dyed the shirt from its original white cotton state.

This was the "test run" of the outfit, to make sure the pieces were coming together. Once we knew everything fit and worked with each other, I added some antique mother of pearl buttons to the vest, and some lace to the collar and cuffs of the shirt, but it got too dark for another picture.

Tunisian Crochet Jacket

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 6:57 PM
For those of you who crochet, and know how to do Tunisian crochet, the newest issue of Inside Crochet (issue 5) has a pattern for a very lovely jacket. I beleive this magazine is a UK publication, but I know I can find it (albeit late) in my local book store here in Ontario. This looks like it may well be worth the import price.

Pictures of the jacket can be found here on the Designers blog:

I love the look of Tunisian crochet, it just takes me forever to do it. Not a speedy project but quite possibly worth the effort. :0)

Shopping

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 11:58 PM
I nearly missed today's update.

So, what have I been up to? Been bike shopping, been bag shopping, been kitchen shopping, been bathroom shopping.... not spent any money yet, but been shopping for all the above (actually not true, spent £2 on the bag). Discovered lost of very nice of all the above, out my budget, and getting a feeling for what I want that's within my budget.

BTW, the property isn't much to look at, but curious parties are welcome to catch me at a convenient point to have a look around.

Oh, and if anyone feels they can take my wall and diagonal measurements and work out the wall angles, please let me know.

Items come from an ironless smoking home. A bit like a caveman.
Prices include p&p and fees. I will look at trades. Make an offer if you don't like the price. I will do deals on multiple purchases.
Items have been stored in a smoking room so I will wash them again before sending out (except for the coat as it is bnwt). This might cause a slight delay but I still aim to get them out to you within a week.

Hi all

I'm going to ask what might be a really dumb question, but I really can't see the answer on my own....

I've been looking at various websites for reasonably priced hotels in New York City. I'm planning to travel there with a friend next summer and, as we're planning to stay for a week or so, we don''t want to stay in a hostel as we usually would. We're still looking to keep it as reasonable as possible though, and having our own bathroom and bed each (as opposed to bunk beds) is a must. However when i've been looking at various hotels on websites they never say whether the rooms include a bathroom or not. Is this common? If it doesn't mention a bathroom can I assume that there will not be one?

Secondly, can anyone recommend any decent hotels in NYC? I know it's a big place so all I can really say is that we'd like to be as central as possible but also keep it as reasonable as possible. If anyone has stayed in a particularly nice place recently could you possibly share?

Many thanks

Oh man, I hope I'm not spamming this place. ^^"
Anyway, my brother and his wife gave me a tiny steampunk tophat for my birthday and I just couldn't resist and had to camwhore a little.

today's offering:

Has your idea of the perfect romantic partner changed with age?

Dude, not at all. I totally still fancy anyone in life who can make the best castles in the sand tray at nursery. I mean, seriously?

Movember Updates

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 9:22 PM
For those that I haven't yet told... I decided to go with the Handlebars for Movember.

Have been growing the mo for 13 days now, and it is actually starting to look how it is supposed to.

Faux-Artsy black and white picture of it:

Ok, so the B&W was to help accentuate the contrast. You see, aside from being suspiciously blonde in parts, it doesn't seem to be growing that fast. I obviously need testosterone injections or something.

However, there's still another almost 3 weeks left in the month for it to become full and luscious and worthy of your envy. Or at least your charitable donation (which can be made here: http://ex.movember.com/mospace/88469 )

Seems that OpenOffice3 interprets an opening quotation mark as a wrod This means I'ma little behind where I thought. That's not a problem. I can catch up.

Spent a lot of today rearranging the story a little an changing the political situation. It's now a civil war rather than an invasion. Main character now spends a lot more time in the city, experiencing the hardships directly. Also since there's ethnic conflict main character is now from a mixed background. Am spending a bit more time doing the selfish highwayman bit. The giving to the poor bit can wait.

I now have a chunk of orphaned plot that needs to be slotted in somewhere. It was in the wrong place anyway. If my MC is going to kill 3 people I don't want her to do it too early in the story.

Also have a few bits that don't make so much sense anymore. Will need to do a little more rewriting.

The wonderful thing about Merlin is that every single line has a different and slashy meaning, whether it's Merlin/Arthur, Merlin/Gaius, Morgana/Gwen, Morgana/MotW, or whatever pairing you happen to favour; wait long enough and there will be proof for it. There is no difficulty in 'ship manifestos for this fandom. :D

Also HELLO! I'm feeling faintly isolated, and you should say hi. :D

ETA: is there actual filming in Cardiff? because every time there is camelot-through-trees it makes me think of Bute Park which is awesome but confusing. XD

Time to fill my tummy with pine needles...

I have winter. It's only seven o'clock and it already feels like the middle of the night. My body clock is pretty convince of this, and is sure that cocoa, sofa and pTerry Pratchet is the way forward. This is a bit of a bind, as I have to go out and be social this evening, and turning down social engagments because you're hibernating seems to cause offence.

It shouldn't be hard to explain, or even to acknowledge to myself, that the reason I feel sleepy, introvert and homebodyish is because it is cold and dark and currently still blowing a storm. I'm not ill, I'm not depressed, there's nothing wrong, I'm just going along with the general ebb of energy nature is in at the moment. From a Pagan perspective it makes perfect sense; the time between Samhain and Yule is a time of darkness and quiet, of conserving energy, of reflection. Then things get a bit better with the Sun's return, and after Imbolc you can come out of hiding and get on with the new projects you set your sights on at Yule. Try explaining that to someone with no familiarity of nature-based philosophy though.

Of course, my current posting to Haywards Heath and the hour-to-hour-and-a-half commute each way it entails isn't helping, but that's a temporary inconvenience that will come to an end in a couple of weeks. I get like this every year, and every year I try and force myself to be social, which more often than not ends in upset and drama. So, this year, I'm acknowledging the ebb and going with it.

So, if you don't see much of me over the next month or so, I'm perfectly alright, I'm probably just asleep. Under the stove.
